Mariners 1, Pirates 0: Uh, the bats got lost in flight?
GETTY
Bryan Reynolds swings and misses Saturday night in Seattle.
Anyone remember all that offense back home ... for, what, a whole week?
Yeah, the Pirates appear to have lost it all like luggage on the way here to the Pacific Northwest, getting shut out for a second straight game, 1-0, by the Mariners tonight at T-Mobile Park. Total hits: Two, both by Spencer Horwitz. Seattle's veteran starter, Luis Castillo, went seven superb innings with two hits, eight strikeouts and 18 swings and misses, and Matt Brash and Andrés Muñoz finished with hitless relief.
"We had some good momentum going that last homestand," Ke'Bryan Hayes told me after going 0 for 3 with two of his team's 11 strikeouts. "Unfortunately, sometimes, it's just baseball. We've gotta figure out what we were doing at home to finish this road trip strong."
This wasted another encouraging showing from rookie Mike Burrows, who pitched five scoreless innings with three hits, four walks and six strikeouts. Since the beginning of June, he's got a 2.29 ERA over seven appearances, six of them starts.
• Lost two in a row • 12-31 away from PNC Park • 26-26 under Kelly
► THE NUMBER
24.4: Percent of the Pirates' games ending in a shutout, including a majors-leading 12 at the plate and another 10 on the mound
