Gabe Davis visited with the Steelers today at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, per source. However, he is expected to leave the facility without signing a contract.
Davis, 26, is coming off a down year with the Jaguars, catching 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games played. His season was cut short after sustaining a meniscus tear in November. The Jaguars released Davis from his three-year, $39 million contract on May 7 with a post-June 1 designation and, more importantly, a failed physical designation.
Prior to last season, Davis had two productive seasons with the Bills, totaling 93 catches for 1,582 yards and 14 touchdowns. The best game of his career came against the Steelers in 2022, catching three passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns, including a league-wide season-high 98-yard score.
Davis' health is a legitimate concern. He previously visited the 49ers and Giants, and now the Steelers will be the third visit without signing a contract right away. If Davis is healthy, he will certainly add the ability to threaten defenses deep. That's the crux of his game, and at 6-2 and 225 pounds, he's got the size to do it. In 2022-23, Davis led all wide receivers with at least 75 targets in average depth of target (16.3, 15.6, respectively). That could, in turn, force defenses to play in more two-high looks and lighten the box for the run game.
However, Davis would be a major risk if there are concerns over his health. A visit like this gives the Steelers a chance to get a closer look and determine if the risk is worth the investment.
