NFL owners voted on multiple proposals today that were tabled during the annual meeting in Palm Beach, Fla. One that passed yesterday was allowing NFL players to play flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Three significant issues were resolved today:
• The tush push is here to stay for 2025. According to multiple reports, the proposal was two shy of the required 24 votes to ban it. The proposal had been altered to include any ball carrier being pushed forward by another offensive player, not just in QB sneak situations.
The Steelers were one of the teams that voted to ban the tush push. The 10 teams that voted against banning it: Eagles, Ravens, Browns, Lions, Jaguars, Dolphins, Patriots, Saints, Jets and Titans.
Former Eagles center Jason Kelce was part of a contingent that made a pitch to owners in favor of keeping the tush push in the game. While it didn't sway the Steelers, Art Rooney II told reporters that it still might have had an impact.
"(He highlighted) it's a safe play and not something you need to worry about much," Rooney said.
• Teams can now declare an onside kick at any point in the game as long as they are trailing. Under the previous policy, teams could only declare an onside kick in the fourth quarter of games. This was initially brought to the table by the competition committee at the annual meeting.
• The Lions are withdrawing their proposal to re-seed playoffs based on record, not by division winners. So, playoff seeding will remain the same.
