The NFLPA released their annual report cards for teams on Wednesday morning, and the Steelers rank 28th of 32 teams with their overall rating.
The most concerning grades centered on ownership and the quality of the locker room, both receiving a D from the players.
Regarding Art Rooney II, players gave him a 6.00 out of 10 for "perceived willingness to invest in the facilities," ranking 30th among owners. Rooney ranked 25th in the players' feeling that he slightly contributes to a positive team culture, and ranked 22nd in their belief that he is committed to building a competitive team.
The poor grade for the locker room ranks 27th in the league. One reason is only 70% of players feeling they have enough room in their individual lockers. Also, just 77% of players feeling the locker room size is adequate.
Another very concerning grade for the Steelers is an NFL-worst C- for the strength coaches, who were hired just last year. Only 75% of players report that they get an individualized training plan from their strength coaching staff, ranking 31st. And, players feel that their strength coaches slightly contribute to their overall success, ranking last in the league.
The NFLPA report card wasn't all bad for the Steelers. Mike Tomlin received highest praise, earning an A from the players. They credit him for developing a strong team culture, and 95% of Steelers players believe their Tomlin is efficient with their time. However, the players feel that Tomlin is "moderately" receptive to locker room feedback on the team’s needs, ranking him 15th in the league.
The Steelers made another positive change by introducing game-day daycare, which raised the players' family support grade from an F- in 2023 to a C- this year. Though, they are one of 10 teams that still do not provide a family room during home games.
When asked to identify the top improvement areas, players mention the locker room, which they say is in "serious need of renovation," and the strength staff, which scores low on providing individualized training plans and contributing to the players’ success.
The grades for each category:
• Treatment of families: C- (26th) • Food/dining area: B- (21st) • Nutritionist/dietician: C+ (30th) • Locker room: D (27th) • Training room: C+ (25th) • Training staff: B (18th) • Weight room: C+ (28th) • Strength coaches: C- (32nd) • Team travel: B+ (15th) • Head coach: A (7th) • Ownership: D (28th)
