The Steelers are signing running back Trey Sermon to a one-year contract, per source. Financial details are not yet known.
Sermon, 26, was one of several veterans at Steelers rookie minicamp on a tryout basis this weekend at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. He was third-round pick of the 49ers out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL Draft, spending time with the 49ers, Eagles in 2022 and Colts over the past four seasons.
Sermon has played 42 games in the NFL, carrying the ball 134 times for 505 yards and three touchdowns. His standout game at the NFL level was in 2023 against the Steelers, racking up 88 rushing yards, just one yard shy of his career high for a single game in 2021. He did it on 17 carries, setting a career high of 5.2 yards per carry.
This addition certainly adds another level of depth and flexibility to the running back position. Jaylen Warren is the leader of the pack, with third-round pick Kaleb Johnson and free-agent signing Kenneth Gainwell in line for touches, as well. Sermon joins the likes of Cordarrelle Patterson and Jonathan Ward as guys who can provide depth. Sermon doesn't have almost any NFL experience in the return game, logging just one career kick return. He does, however, have a good amount of work on special teams under his belt with 106 career snaps, 51 coming over the past two seasons with the Colts.
