No S-Rod, Joyce, Kang … so who fills out the bench?

Alen Hanson hopes to show the Pirates he should start the season with them. - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- It's the first official day of spring. Time to get serious. Who's going to make this team, anyway?

There are precious few spots truly up for grabs on the Pirates, and that's a good thing. Any franchise that has something resembling open tryouts in March probably isn't going to be very good once the season starts.

But, after the free-agent departures of Sean Rodríguez and Matt Joyce, plus the ongoing legal saga of Jung Ho Kang, there's probably room for two players to earn their way onto the opening-day 25-man roster, with Chris StewartAdam Frazier and John Jaso all but assured of flying north with the team.
