All four IIHF World Championship quarterfinal games on Thursday featured Penguins players, and three of the four teams with Penguins players on their roster advanced to the semifinal round.

• Russia eliminated the United States in a 4-3 win. Evgeni Malkin recorded the primary assist on Mikhail Grigorenko's game-winning goal and registered four shots on goal in 14:22.

• Canada eliminated Switzerland with a 3-2 overtime win. Matt Murray made 22 saves on 24 shots, and Jared McCann recorded one shot on goal in 11:46.

• The Czech Republic eliminated Germany with a 5-1 win. Dominik Simon had the lone assist on Jakub Voracek's game-winning goal in the third period. Simon recorded no shots on goal in 14:42.

• Sweden fell to Finland, 5-4, in overtime. Sweden led 2-1 after the first period, with Sweden's second goal coming from Patric Hornqvist. Finland entered the third period trailing 4-3, and Marko Anttila, who plays for Jokerit in the KHL, tied the game with 1:29 remaining. Sakari Manninen, who also most recently played for Jokerit, scored the game-winning goal for Finland 1:37 into overtime.

The semifinals will take place on Saturday. Russia will play Finland, and Canada will play the Czech Republic. The winners of each game will play for gold, and the losers of each game will play for bronze.
