CRANBERRY, Pa. -- You can cross another name off the list of candidates for the Penguins' general manager job.
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported Thursday that the Penguins did ask Seattle for permission to interview assistant general manager Jason Botterill about the position, but they either did not receive permission at all, or didn't receive permission in a timeframe that works for them.
So, Botterill is out as a candidate.
Botterill worked in the Penguins organization from 2007-17, first as the director of hockey operations and ultimately the associate general manager. He spent three seasons as the Sabres' general manager before being fired and taking the Seattle job.
Other candidates who have already been ruled out include Rangers general manager Chris Drury, who wasn't interested in the position, and Canadiens assistant general manager Scott Mellanby, who also declined to interview.
TSN's Frank Seravalli reported on Wednesday that Penguins interim general manager Patrik Allvin and NHL analyst Kevin Weekes will be among the first to interview for the permanent position. The Penguins also asked for and received permission from the Kings to speak with senior advisor Ron Hextall, who was previously general manager of the Flyers.
