Day 1 of Penguins training camp

CRANBERRY, Pa. -- The Penguins aren't yet 100 percent vaccinated, Ron Hextall disclosed during Thursday's opening day of training camp.

Hextall said that the Penguins have just one remaining player who isn't fully vaccinated, but added that they expect him to be fully vaccinated "in the next few weeks."

Hextall declined to disclose which player remains unvaccinated.

As part of the NHL's COVID-19 policy for this season, unvaccinated players are subject to more strict health and safety protocols, primarily on road trips:

• Unvaccinated players can only be in the team hotel, practice facility, and arena on the road, and are unable to visit bars, restaurants, gyms and pools

• Unvaccinated players are not permitted to have visitors or teammates in their hotel rooms

• Teams are permitted to suspend unvaccinated players without pay if they are deemed to be "unable to participate in club activities," either due to a positive test or an inability to travel because of government restrictions

The Canadian government requires that unvaccinated travelers quarantine for two weeks upon entering the country, making it essentially impossible for any unvaccinated players to take part in their team's games or practices in Canada this season.

The Penguins' first Canadian trip is Nov. 13 in Ottawa, giving the unvaccinated Penguins player ample time to get vaccinated before the Penguins make that trip.
