The Penguins on Friday traded Anthony Beauvillier to the Capitals for a second-round draft pick in this summer's draft.
The trade gives the Penguins the potential for 12 picks in this summer's draft, depending on how the conditional first-rounder from the Canucks plays out. They'll have one or two in the first round, this one in the second round, three picks in the third round, one in the fourth round, three in the fifth round, and one in each of the sixth and seventh rounds.
Beauvillier was set to be a free agent this summer. He was on a one-year contract with a $1.25 million cap hit. The move brings the Penguins to 48 of their allotted 50 contracts and 22 players toward the 23-man roster limit, the latter limit goes away after 3 p.m. today.
Barring further moves, the Penguins won't have any problem dressing a full group of forwards tonight against the Golden Knights. They had 12 at practice aside from Beauvillier on Thursday, and that was with Tommy Novak still en route.
My take: This is what Kyle Dubas intended to do when he signed a bunch of free agents coming off of down years to short-term deals last summer. They weren't intended to be the answer to anything here, because the team wasn't built to compete this year. The hope was that some of those players on down years rebound and could be flipped for futures down the line. At least one of those moves panned out in Beauvillier. A second-round pick is a good get.
