Cristopher Sanchez shut down the Pirates offense with a masterful shutout as the Phillies beat the Pirates, 6-0, this afternoon at PNC Park. Sanchez had a career-high 13 strikeouts with no walks and just six hits allowed while extending his consecutive scoreless streak to 29 2/3 innings.
Don Kelly on what made Sanchez so good this afternoon: "Throws strikes. He mixes it up. Sinker was elite today. The slider and changeup, he could throw for strikes, he could throw beneath the zone."
Sanchez managed to have 17 of his 44 sinkers called for strikes.
He also had some help in the bottom of the eighth on this spectacular catch by Justin Crawford to rob Henry Davis of a likely double:
"Everything comes out and looks the same. He really kept us off-balanced and we couldn't get much going there," Kelly said. "I thought we did a good job there late, getting some guys in scoring position, especially there in the ninth inning. He was in control for most of the game."
Marcell Ozuna had an afternoon to forget with the golden sombrero, striking out against Sanchez in each of his four at-bats:
“He was painting and he was doing good," Ozuna said. "I was sitting on an in-zone pitch, it was the changeup and I couldn't get it. It drops too much, that pitch, and I couldn't touch it.”
