The NFL is suspending DK Metcalf for two games without pay for getting into an altercation with a fan during the Steelers' 29-24 win over the Lions on Sunday at Ford Field.
Metcalf is appealing, which will be heard by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell or one of his designees. Should he lose his appeal, Metcalf will not play another snap in the regular season. And, according to a report by CBS Sports, Metcalf would also lose $45 million in guaranteed money from his four-year, $132 million extension.
The incident happened during the second quarter at the railing that divides the fans from the players on the field. Metcalf appeared to grab the fan by the shirt, say something, then extended his arm back toward the fan's face to let go. Many view it as an attempted punch at the fan.
Two sides of the story have come out in the 24 hours since the incident took place. The fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy, claims he was calling Metcalf by his "government name," DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf. Through multiple podcasts, including Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Ochocinco, Metcalf claims to have been called a racial slur and said the fan called his mother a derogatory four-letter word.
Through a statement issued by Head Murphy Law, Kennedy vehemently denies any claims that he said anything of that nature about Metcalf or his family:
HEAD MURPHY LAW
Regardless of what the fan may or may not have said, Metcalf's actions violated NFL policy, which states: "Players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and…if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable."
Metcalf's suspension could have a major impact on the Steelers' playoff chances, which really hinge on winning the AFC North. The Steelers are currently sitting pretty atop the division, needing only a win in Cleveland next Sunday to clinch their first AFC North title since 2020. They could even clinch it before stepping on the field in Cleveland if the Ravens lose to the Packers on Saturday. So, there's a chance the Steelers might not need Metcalf to clinch the division, which would give them at least one home playoff game.
However, if the Ravens beat the Packers and the Steelers lose to the Browns on Sunday, the division title will come down to a Week 18 matchup between the Steelers and Ravens at Acrisure Stadium. And if Metcalf doesn't win his appeal, the Steelers would be without their No. 1 receiver for the most pivotal game of the season.
