Despite the possibilities of trading back in the first round or trying to acquire a second Day 2 pick, the Steelers have stayed with their original picks thus far in the NFL Draft. They've addressed defensive tackle in adding Derrick Harmon in the first round, then pounced on running back Kaleb Johnson with him sitting there at 83rd overall.
So, with the third and final day here, is now the time to take a quarterback?
The short answer is yes, now's the time. The Steelers did all their homework on these quarterbacks for a reason. They also confirmed what many suspected of this class: There isn't any difference makers outside of Cam Ward, who was selected first overall by the Titans.
But, that doesn't mean there isn't interest in trying to find a guy later in the draft and seeing if he turns into something. Only five quarterbacks have been taken thus far, which means there are several worth considering. However, three make the most sense:
• Shedeur Sanders, Colorado: Nothing, not even being passed over throughout the first two days of the draft, changes the fact that Sanders is perhaps the best pocket quarterback in this class. He's unflappable in the pocket and can make just about any throw, all while having anticipation for those throws and a high football IQ. His arm is pretty average for NFL standards and his lack of mobility make it difficult to project him as a special playmaker, which lowers his ceiling. But, on Day 3, he's a high-floor guy. High-floor can absolutely work at this stage of the draft.
• Will Howard, Ohio State: The intangibles are solid with Howard. He's a great leader and elevated his game when it mattered, leading Ohio State to a national championship with a stellar performance. He's got the ideal size for the position and has a willingness to attack any portion of the field. While he's certainly not a statue, he's not a dual-threat guy and lacks a truly special arm. While his performance in the playoffs elevated his stock, there were too many times prior to that in which he shrunk in big moments. It's for NFL teams to figure out which version of Howard they'd be getting. If they get the playoff version, they're getting a legitimate starter. If not, they're getting a career backup.
• Kyle McCord, Syracuse: McCord's the true definition of a gunslinger. He can make some huge plays because of it, but he can make some boneheaded plays, too. That's why, according to Pro Football Focus, he led Power Four conferences in both big-time throws and turnover-worthy plays. If McCord had a special arm, he'd draw comparisons to Ben Roethlisberger. However, he just doesn't have the same type of arm. When drafting a gunslinger, you've gotta make sure they have enough firepower.
The Steelers have shown legitimate interest in all three of these quarterbacks. They held pre-draft visits with Sanders and McCord, and they met with Howard twice during the draft process -- once formally at the Combine, and again for dinner ahead of his pro day.
The focus will be on quarterback, especially since the Steelers have two more spots to fill on their 90-man roster for training camp. But, don't be surprised if they double dip at defensive tackle. There are a number of intriguing defensive tackles left, including Indiana's C.J. West, Maryland's Jordan Phillips, Nebraska's Ty Robinson, Ole Miss' JJ Pegues, Florida State's Joshua Farmer, Virginia Tech's Aeneas Peebles, Ohio State's Ty Hamilton, Alabama's Tim Smith and SMU's Jared Harrison-Hunte.
