In addition to the 2025 NFL Draft class and the undrafted free agents already signed, NFL teams always bring in more players for tryouts during rookie minicamp. This year, seventh-round pick Carson Bruener won't be the only player in attendance at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex with family ties to the Steelers.
The Steelers are bringing in Slippery Rock defensive back Eddie Faulkner IV for a tryout, the son of current running backs coach Eddie Faulkner.
"This is awesome for Eddie and for our program to have another guy getting a shot to experience an NFL minicamp," Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz said in a press release. "Not only was Eddie an excellent player that did it all for us on the field over the last four years, he was also an Academic All-American that excelled in the classroom and represented the true meaning of a student-athlete."
During his four years at Slippery Rock, Faulkner twice earned All-PSAC West honors. He recorded 160 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, five interceptions, 17 passes defended, seven sacks, seven forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Faulkner also blocked one kick on special teams.
Becuase Slippery Rock is Division II, Faulkner was permitted to work out at Pitt's pro day throughout the draft cycle, in which several Steelers coaches were in attendance, including special teams coordinator Danny Smith and defensive quality control coach Jason Brooks.
At Pitt's pro day, Faulker was measured at 5-8, 189 pounds. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, 37.5-inch vertical and ran the three-cone drill in 7.07 seconds.
Faulkner is one of nine known invites to rookie camp for a tryout. In addition, the Steelers are bringing in South Carolina linebacker Debo Williams, Pitt outside linebacker Nate Matlack, Rhode Island wide receiver Tommy Smith, William & Mary quarterback Hollis Mathis, New Hampshire quarterback Seth Morgan, Central Michigan center Dom Serapiglia, James Madison wide receiver Omarion Dollison and Notre Dame cornerback Max Hurleman.
Despite speculation, Boston College wide receiver Dino Tomlin, the son of Mike Tomlin, didn't receive an invite from the Steelers. Instead, according to a report by WTAE, Tomlin will be trying out for the Buccaneers.
The dates for rookie minicamp have not yet been announced, but it usually takes place on the second weekend following the NFL Draft. With the later start to OTAs this year, the rookie minicamp dates could be in flux, as well.
