Halicke's mock draft: Pass on Sanders, fortify trenches
The NFL Draft is finally here. Will the Steelers continue to address the trenches, as they have in Omar Khan's first two drafts? Will they take a chance on a quarterback? Come Thursday night, there will be no need to speculate any further.
But, in one last ditch effort of speculation, here's my final mock draft of the 2025 cycle, ending with a full first-round projection:
1. TITANS CAM WARD, QB, MIAMI (FL)
No need to overthink this one. The Titans need a quarterback and Ward is the best in a good class.
2. BROWNS TRAVIS HUNTER, CB/WR, COLORADO
Hunter is the best player in this draft. The Browns need great players, and Hunter can immediately become both one of the better cornerbacks and receivers on Cleveland's roster the second he's drafted.
3. GIANTS ABDUL CARTER, EDGE, PENN STATE
The Giants don't need an edge rusher, but Carter is the second-best defensive player in this draft. Plus, they passed on Micah Parsons a few years back, allowing their NFC East rival Cowboys an opportunity to take him, where he's blossomed into one of the game's premier pass rushers. They may remember that this time around.
4. PATRIOTS WILL CAMPBELL, OT, LSU
I could see Ashton Jeanty going this high, but Mike Vrabel being the head coach makes me think the trenches will be a key emphasis to better support Drake Maye. Getting a plug-and-play tackle with a high pedigree could be a good start.
5. JAGUARS ASHTON JEANTY, RB, BOISE STATE
If the first four picks go as mocked here, this pick could either be Jeanty or Mason Graham, the top defensive tackle in this class. The Jaguars could use both, especially since Travis Etienne is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and on the decline. Jeanty gives new head coach Liam Coen, an offensive guy, a phenomenal weapon right out of the gate.
6. RAIDERS MASON GRAHAM, DT, MICHIGAN
With Jeanty off the board, I have the Raiders fortifying the trenches by adding the best of a deep group of defensive tackles. New general manager John Spytek comes from the Buccaneers, a team that has used all but one of its first-round picks on line-of-scrimmage players since 2018 (Devin White being the lone exception). Don't be surprised if Jeanty is gone, that the Raiders take either Graham or Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou.
7. JETS ARMAND MEMBOU, OT, MISSOURI
Once again, not a surefire pick, but adding Membou fills an immediate need with the departure of Morgan Moses creating a hole at right tackle. They could look to add a playmaker such as Penn State's Tyler Warren or Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, or maybe even give Aaron Glenn an intriguing defensive player such as Texas' Jahdae Barron, but it makes a lot of sense to fix the trenches first. It's not a deep class of tackles, so best to figure it out early.
8. PANTHERS JALON WALKER, LB, GEORGIA
I believe the Panthers are going to try and trade back like crazy. Many teams in the top 10 probably are, but it's just not that top-heavy of a class. Thus, they could be forced to make a pick here. Given their desperate need to add playmakers to the defense, I'm going with Walker, who fits a similar profile to Parsons -- an off-ball linebacker with the ability to line up as a edge defender and rush the quarterback.
9. SAINTS MYKEL WILLIAMS, EDGE, GEORGIA
Despite Derek Carr's shoulder injury, it doesn't appear that the work they've done on Shedeur Sanders is quite enough to make me comfortable slotting him here. They've done more work on learning about Jaxson Dart. And, they have the draft capital to move back into the latter portion of the first round to take a quarterback if they want to. Here, I can see them addressing edge rusher, which is a big need, getting ahead of a potential run at the position.
10. *FALCONS (from Bears) MIKE GREEN, EDGE, MARSHALL
Trade: Falcons trade 2025 first-round pick (10th overall) to Bears for 2025 first-round pick (15th overall) and 2026 third-round pick
The first trade of this mock draft comes with the Bears finding a way to recoup a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 by acquiring a third-rounder next year. The Falcons jump up five spots to take the best edge rusher on the board in Green, ensuring the ability to address a widely-known need.
11. 49ERS WALTER NOLEN, DT, OLE MISS
The 49ers need to get back to dominating the line of scrimmage on the defensive side. Nolen isn't the most polished guy, but he may have the highest ceiling of all defensive tackles in this class. The defensive line is seen as a huge need, as well, so this makes sense as San Francisco looks to pivot toward the future.
12. COWBOYS MATTHEW GOLDEN, WR, TEXAS
The Cowboys could try and find a plug-and-play interior offensive lineman such as North Dakota State's Grey Zabel, but I've heard a lot of noise about Golden to the Cowboys. He'd be a formidable pairing with CeeDee Lamb, giving Dak Prescott another great weapon.
13. DOLPHINS JAHDAE BARRON, CB, TEXAS
The Dolphins have a ton of needs, making them difficult to predict. They may want to go with a defensive tackle here if only Graham is off the board, but with no cornerback taken thus far, it's hard to pass up on Barron. He's an impressive kid (blew the Steelers away at the Combine) with a ton of versatility and ball skills. That plays at the NFL level.
14. COLTS TYLER WARREN, TE, PENN STATE
The Colts have needed a tight end for quite a while, and if Warren falls into their lap, this should be one of the easiest picks in the draft.
15. *BEARS (from Falcons) OMARION HAMPTON, RB, NORTH CAROLINA
After trading back, the Bears have the second-best running back in this class falling into their laps, making it difficult to pass on him. They could look to add an offensive tackle or edge rusher, but giving Caleb Williams a legitimate three-down back behind him is tough to pass on.
16. CARDINALS JIHAAD CAMPBELL, LB, ALABAMA
Campbell's got some medical concerns, which is why he probably won't go in the top 10. But, he's another off-ball linebacker with edge capabilities, giving the Cardinals a versatile playmaker at a position of need.
17. BENGALS SHEMAR STEWART, EDGE, TEXAS A&M
For the Bengals, it should be all about defense. They could address literally any position on that side of the ball, but edge rusher might be the best bet at this point in the first round. Stewart is the best of the bunch left on the board here. However, just about any defensive player here isn't a bad choice. They need so much help on that side of the ball.
18. SEAHAWKS GREY ZABEL, IOL, NORTH DAKOTA STATE
There's a lot of talk about Zabel to the Seahawks here, especially if the Cowboys pass on him at 12th overall. The interior of the offensive line is a gigantic need, and Zabel's a low-risk choice.
19. BUCCANEERS DONOVAN EZEIRUAKU, EDGE, BOSTON COLLEGE
Another edge rusher gone. The Buccaneers need playmakers to get after the quarterback, and Ezeiruaku not only possesses great traits but was productive (14 sacks last season) at a Power Four school. Cornerback could be in play here, potentially Michigan's Will Johnson if they feel good about the medical concerns.
20. BRONCOS TETAIROA MCMILLAN, WR, ARIZONA
The Broncos want playmakers for Bo Nix. They'd love a running back, but with Jeanty and Hampton both off the board here, I have them taking the best of any running back, wide receiver or tight end. McMillan can turn into something special, given his high football IQ and versatility to play multiple spots.
Trade: Steelers trade 2025 first-round pick (21st overall) and 2025 sixth-round pick (185th overall) to Texans for 2025 first-round pick (25th overall) and Dolphins' 2025 third-round pick (79th overall)
The Texans are looking to rebuild their offensive line, specifically at tackle after trading away Laremy Tunsil. I have Banks going here as perhaps the best tackle on the board, but this could be Ohio State's Josh Simmons or Oregon's Josh Conerly Jr. The Steelers take advantage of the Texans' desire to fortify their offensive line by recouping a Day 2 pick, still having the ability to address a couple of different positions.
22. CHARGERS KENNETH GRANT, DT, MICHIGAN
The Steelers' mock trade comes with the risk of missing out on defensive tackles they like, and Jim Harbaugh gets the chance to both build up the trenches and reunite with a player of his from Michigan. He and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will know how to use him. I wouldn't rule out Michigan tight end Colston Loveland here, either. Not only because he's another former Wolverine, but could give Justin Herbert another weapon.
23. PACKERS TREY AMOS, CB, OLE MISS
With Jaire Alexander's position on the team in flux, the Packers could very well address cornerback. This could be Amos, Johnson or even Kentucky's Maxwell Hairston. I wouldn't rule out offensive tackle -- why the Texans may have looked to trade up ahead of the Packers -- or edge rusher if there isn't a run like I've mocked here.
24. VIKINGS MALAKI STARKS, S, GEORGIA
Starks just seems to be a great fit for Brian Flores. He's also a high-character guy and can bounce around a bit. This is another team that could also take a defensive tackle, but so that's worth watching should the Steelers actually trade back.
Of all the defensive tackles that could be available to them, based on conversations I've had, Harmon is the one the Steelers like most. They love his passion for the game and high football IQ, not to mention his love -- and remarkably similar build -- for Cam Heyward. Maybe he can be molded into Heyward's replacement, but only after he stops aging like a fine wine.
Defensive tackle has been the Steelers' priority from the beginning. They won't just take the best of the bunch whenever they're on the clock, especially if it means passing on a much better player at another position, but this team wants to continue to improve their play at the line of scrimmage. That's been made clear to me over and over again every time I ask somebody on the inside about this draft. With the past two drafts addressing the offensive line early, now it's time to address defensive line -- before it's too late (after Heyward retires).
And, yes, I have the Steelers passing on Sanders should he be available in this scenario. There'd have to be several other players off the board before they'd consider it. Based on the conversations I've had with team sources, they'll only take a quarterback in the first round this year if they are 100% convinced he can be a legitimate franchise quarterback, and I'm not 100% convinced everybody on the inside feels that way about Sanders.
The Steelers aren't opposed to taking a quarterback in this draft. But, the next time they take a guy in the first round, they want to make as sure as possible he's truly the guy. They don't want another Kenny Pickett situation. I can guarantee that.
Trade: Rams trade 2025 first-round pick (26th overall) to Giants for 2025 second-round pick (34th overall) and 2025 third-round pick (65th overall)
The Giants have two third-round picks this year, so I have them using their original third-rounder to move up eight spots to grab a young quarterback that can learn for a year behind Russell Wilson. From the Rams' perspective, they don't have a second-round pick this year, so moving back eight spots to recoup a second Day 2 pick -- the sweet spot in this draft -- could be in play for them. The difference between 26th and 34th overall isn't that drastic this year, and the Rams possibly take advantage of the Giants looking for a young quarterback. So, win-win for both sides.
27. RAVENS TYLER BOOKER, G, ALABAMA
The Ravens have a few needs, with guard leading the way. They could entertain a safety, especially if Starks falls, but Booker still being on the board here makes a lot of sense to help solidify everything up front.
28. LIONS JAMES PIERCE JR., EDGE, TENNESSEE
The Lions need help up front on defense, whether it on the edge or at defensive tackle. Pierce is the best edge rusher left on the board, with serious All-Pro potential if he reaches his ceiling. He could be a great bookend with Aidan Hutchinson.
29. COMMANDERS NIC SCOURTON, EDGE, TEXAS A&M
If the Rams aren't open for business for a trade up for a quarterback, the Commanders might be. They only have five picks in each of the 2025 and 2026 drafts. They could look to acquire as many picks as possible. In this scenario, the Browns would be the most quarterback-needy team left, and don't need to jump in front of the Bills, Chiefs or Eagles to snag a guy such as Jaxson Dart or Jalen Milroe. If the Commanders stand pat, a pass rusher makes a lot of sense, which is why I have Scourton going here.
30. BILLS WILL JOHNSON, CB, MICHIGAN
Johnson only falls because of medical concerns (foot injury last season, hamstring injury during draft process), but that stops here. The Bills have a need at cornerback, and Johnson has a great chance of developing into a legitimate No. 1 cornerback.
31. CHIEFS JOSH SIMMONS, OT, OHIO STATE
The biggest expectation for the Chiefs is adding to their offensive line. Simmons is coming off an ACL injury five games into the 2024 season, but he possess a ton of NFL traits and has played both left and right tackle at the college level. If everything checks out regarding his health, the Chiefs could be adding a good player up front.
32. EAGLES EMEKA EGBUKA, WR, OHIO STATE
Edge rusher is being talked about quite a bit here, but there is some serious buzz that they could be looking to go against the norm and take a wide receiver. They have to possibly think about the idea of moving on from A.J. Brown, who's getting closer to 30 years old and much more expensive than Devonta Smith. So, I have them taking Egbuka, who is a smart wide receiver that can develop into a great No. 2.
