There are few in the media who are as plugged in with Mike Tomlin as Fox's Jay Glazer. In a recent appearance on the Fantasy Football Happy Hour with Matthew Berry, Glazer poured water on Russell Wilson possibly returning to the Steelers.
"I don't think that's going to happen," Glazer said. "I think you'll see a new start for Russell somewhere else."
Glazer went on to say he doesn't think the Steelers know who their quarterback is going to be in 2025 yet. That includes a potential reunion with Justin Fields. Of course, Art Rooney II told reporters last month that the team would like to retain one of either Wilson or Fields, with a lot of the evidence suggesting Fields might be the preferred player.
Wilson has been very open and forthright about wanting to return to the Steelers, but there's been a lot of noise around how the season ended and its impact on the team's initial desire to run it back with the 13-year veteran. Glazer has his own theory of what transpired.
"I think the problem, the way I saw it, they were like, 'Russ, you're going to play Steelers football. We're okay with being a third-and-2 team,'" Glazer explained. "There's no 'let Russ cook' stuff anymore. And I think when they started having success, Russ was like, 'Oh, this is me. I got this.' And they were like, 'No, no, no, no, no, get back to how we were doing it.' But that's Russell. And I get it. You have to have a certain ego to be great at that position."
I do know for a fact that the Steelers had been talking about bringing Wilson back on a multiyear contract since August, and that was still the plan in the weeks leading up to the playoff loss. However, I was also told how the season ended could still alter those plans. And when the team ended the season on a five-game losing streak in which Wilson's play deteriorated, it's safe to say the team began rethinking their original plan.
