Le'Veon Bell is eyeing a return to the NFL. Well, a return to only one NFL team.
In a series of Snapchat stories over the weekend, Bell made it clear he wants to begin training in March. He said he see how his body reacts and be honest with himself if he can actually play in the NFL again. After all, he hasn't played in the NFL since 2021.
"If I hit April and I make this decision to come back to play in the NFL again, mark my words down: I will be better than I ever was," Bell said. "And, I will only come back for that one team. You all know who it is. I don’t have to say no team. You all know who it is."
The clip of Bell explaining the parameters of his NFL return and the one team he'd come back and play for.
Bell has been publicly regretful and remorseful about how he handled his contract dispute in 2018. And, after visiting the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in December, Bell publicly apologized on Snapchat to Steelers fans for leaving "the best damned fans in this world."
If Bell is truly eyeing a return to only the Steelers, and the team is actually open to a reunion, he'll have to accept a much lesser role. Bell's time has not only passed, the Steelers have a bonafide "two-headed monster," to quote Art Rooney II, in Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Both running backs eclipsed 1,000 yards from scrimmage last season. Anything added to the running back room will only be added to complement those two, not supplant them.
The Steelers do need a third running back behind Harris and Warren. The Steelers were very fortunate last season that both running backs remained healthy all season long. That's not typical. Running backs get a lot of wear and tear, and missing games comes with the territory. It's more than reasonable to think a third running back will have to be relied on at some point in 2024, even if it's just for a game.
Could Bell be that third running back? Would Mike Tomlin actually entertain a reunion? I have my doubts, but never say never, right?
