It's finally here. Tonight, the 2025 NFL Draft will begin. Over the next three days, the Steelers will do everything they can to use their six picks to improve the roster for 2025 and beyond. And, there's a lot you need to know before Roger Goodell steps up to the podium tonight in Green Bay, Wis.
To prepare you for this marquee event, I've put together this, for lack of a better term, hodgepodge of information, laying out everything you need to know about the team heading into the biggest event of the offseason. This will include all of the latest I've heard from within the organization, my best projection of the team's top-21 players and all of the other draft and background information we've reported here on DK Pittsburgh Sports throughout the draft cycle.
WHAT I'M HEARING
• Why the emphasis on defensive tackle?
Defensive tackle has been the Steelers' priority from the beginning. This goes back to conversations I had at the Senior Bowl and have carried through into this week. Bottom line: This team desperately wants to continue to improve their play at the line of scrimmage. That's been made clear to me over and over again. With the past two drafts addressing the offensive line early, now it's time to address defensive line.
And, yeah, the way their season ended by giving up 299 rushing yards left a sour taste in their collective mouth. It was the kick in the pants to get them serious about making their defensive front back to being dominant.
• Let's talk about quarterback ...
The Steelers will only take a quarterback in the first round this year if they are absolutely convinced he can be a legitimate franchise quarterback. What they want to avoid more than anything is going down another Kenny Pickett road. That's been made abundantly clear to me. And based on all of the conversations I've had over the past few months, I'm not 100% convinced everybody on the inside feels that way about any quarterback in this draft not named Cam Ward. Yes, that includes Shedeur Sanders.
The Steelers aren't opposed to taking a quarterback in this draft. They genuinely like a few of the guys in this class. I believe they like Sanders. I know they like Ohio State's Will Howard, too. The only question is ... how much? But, the next time they take a guy in the first round, they want to make as sure as possible he's truly the guy. You know, an actual franchise quarterback. So, if you see Goodell announce Sanders to the Steelers at 21st overall tonight, that'll tell you exactly what the Steelers think of him. Not some sort of project, but the next guy who can lead them to a Super Bowl.
• Let's talk about George Pickens ...
I have yet to hear anything from the inside that the Steelers are seriously considering trading Pickens, and there are two reasons why. First, it creates a gaping hole on the roster. You know, the same hole the Steelers had last season when Pickens went down with an injury and the No. 1 guy was Calvin Austin III. They don't want to deal with that again. Second, the Steelers aren't all that impressed with this class of wide receivers. If they traded Pickens for a second-round pick -- which would be the absolute best-case scenario -- they don't believe anybody they could get in the second round can be as impactful as Pickens. It would probably have to be the right guy in the first round in order to get Omar Khan to bite on anything.
Now, Khan isn't doing his job if he's not fielding phone calls. If a team calls them at any point and completely blows them away with a trade offer, that could change everything. These situations have many variables and are always fluid. But, if my feet are put to the flame, I'm betting Pickens is a Steeler in 2025.
• Don't count on getting back in the second round ...
The Steelers want to acquire another Day 2 pick. There's no doubt about that, and there is a concerted effort to get that done. As I've been saying for the past few weeks, and recently had it confirmed for me, they believe it's the sweet spot of this draft. But, the options are limited. If they find a way to get it done, they may have to settle for a third-round pick instead of a second-rounder.
Trading back to a later first-round pick is the most attractive option for acquiring another Day 2 pick, but the Steelers don't expect any trade back gets them back in the second round. But, if they end up with multiple third-round picks in this draft, they'll be happy.
• Defensive tackle will be taken. Any other surefire positions the Steelers are taking?
To reinforce what Dejan Kovacevicreported, running back. They really love this running back class, and they are not opposed to taking one in the first round if the board falls a certain way. Taking Najee Harris in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft has not turned them off to certain players. The only potential running backs I could see them taking in the first round are North Carolina's Omarion Hampton and Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson. I know for a fact they love Henderson. He blew them away at the NFL Combine.
If running back isn't taken in the first round, Day 2 could be where they address it. They've met with several Day 2 running backs throughout the draft process. That's another reason why I believe there's a real effort to acquire any other pick on Friday night.
THE TOP 21
When the Steelers build their board for the first round, they'll build it based on the top players leading up to their pick. This year, since they're picking 21st overall, they've built a Top-21 board, but specific to the Steelers. This isn't just the top 21 players in the draft. And in their top 21, Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin, Andy Weidl, Art Rooney II and other decision makers treat each slot as if they were picking there. So, the No. 1 player on the board is who they would select if they were picking first overall in the draft. The No. 2 player is who they would pick if they were picking second overall and the No. 1 player was off the board. And, so on.
This means certain players won't be on this list, despite being high on league-wide draft boards. A great example is edge rusher. This is a great class at the position. But, not only do the Steelers not need one, they have a surplus. So, I have just one on this list.
1. Cam Ward, QB, Miami (FL)
If the Steelers had the first overall pick, take a quarterback that stands a legitimate chance of being the next franchise guy. Easy pick.
2. Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado
Hunter's the best overall player in the draft. Another easy pick.
3. Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State
I don't care if the Steelers already have three edge rushers. You don't pass on a premier pass rusher like Carter if you get the chance.
4. Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State
He stands a great chance of being an All-Pro running back. 100% worth the investment of a first-round pick.
5. Mason Graham, DT, Michigan
He's the best defensive tackle on the board. If the Steelers are on the clock and no defensive tackles are taken, I'd have a hard time believing they'd pass on a guy who has this kind of a motor.
6. Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon
There's a legitimate chance that Harmon is available at 21st overall. Depending on how many players are still available on their big board, they could either try to trade back and still get him or just take their best player.
7. Jahdae Barron, CB, Texas
After the top two defensive tackles, I have the most impressive cornerback. I don't care that he's a slot guy. The Eagles just proved how valuable that position is, and Barron is a highly smart football player. And I know the Steelers were blown away by him in their meeting with him at the Combine.
8. Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss
I don't care that the Steelers didn't host him for a pre-draft visit. As long as there are no medical concerns, he'll be high on their board.
9. Armand Membou, OT, Missouri
This is another guy who definitely won't be there at 21st overall, but again, what would the Steelers pick if they were picking ninth overall and the top eight guys are off the board? Membou would provide some insurance in case Broderick Jones fails.
10. Omarion Hampton, RB, North Carolina
Don't be surprised if Hampton is the choice at 21 if he's there and there's a run of defensive tackles. Yes, even over Kenneth Grant. I feel like they'd value what Hampton would bring more than Grant. After all, if Grant isn't as versatile as some of the other defensive tackles, maybe he just won't play enough to have as much value as a potential bell cow.
11. Tyler Warren, TE, Penn State
If the Steelers are on the clock and the two best players available are Tyler Warren and Grant, give me the guy who's an absolute weapon on offense. Warren is ridiculously dangerous.
12. Kenneth Grant, DT, Michigan
When it gets to a certain point, Grant's gotta be the best guy available. Again, I worry only about his versatility compared to the other defensive tackles. Otherwise, his freakish traits make him arguably the best option at the position.
13. Will Campbell, OT, LSU
Campbell might end up being a guard when all is said and done, and Isaac Seumalo is entering the final year of his contract. He won't be there when the Steelers pick, but again, there has to be a point in which he's included.
14. TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State
This seems really high, but we're starting to run out of other viable options at 21st overall. He's experienced, he can catch passes and he's the best in this class in pass protection. He can play all three downs right away. That's valuable.
15. Matthew Golden, WR, Texas
There are a lot of reasons to love Golden, and I think the Steelers like him to a certain extent. Maybe even more than a certain quarterback.
16. Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado
If the 15 players above are all off the board and the Steelers are off the clock, I'd understand this pick. It also means they probably traded down. Take the chance. Whatever.
17. Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State
I believe the Steelers really like Egbuka, but to a certain extent. Maybe if they trade back far in the first round and he's there, I could see him being their guy.
18. Will Johnson, CB, Michigan
Cornerback's not an overly pressing need, but Johnson's a legit guy on the outside. He has to be on this board.
19. Trey Amos, CB, Ole Miss
Amos is very underrated in this class. Really good man coverage corner, and the Steelers brought him in for a pre-draft visit. I consider them intrigued.
20. Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona
As previously stated, I don't think the Steelers love the receiver class very much. But, McMillan is interesting enough to make the top 20.
21. Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State
Again, another option in case Jones fails in Year 3. The chances of all the of the 20 players above being gone at 21st overall are slim to none, so I don't expect this to be the pick.
As for everything else regarding the NFL Draft, here's what you need to know and how it relates to the Steelers:
• Round 1, 21st overall • Round 3, 83rd overall • Round 4, 123rd overall • Round 5, 156th overall • Round 6, 185th overall (via Chicago through Seattle) • Round 7, 229th overall (via Atlanta through Philadelphia)
The Steelers traded away their 2025 second-round pick (52nd overall) to acquire DK Metcalf from the Seahawks. Their sixth-round pick in this draft (185th overall) was acquired in the Metcalf trade, as the Steelers traded away one of two seventh-round picks acquired in the Kenny Pickett trade to Philadelphia last offseason (223rd overall). The remaining seventh-round pick (229th overall) is the other pick acquired from the Eagles.
For those who want to know, the Steelers' original 2025 sixth-round pick (195th overall) was traded away as part of the deal that sent Kevin Dotson to the Rams in 2023. The sixth-round pick that was traded to the Bears in the Justin Fields trade last offseason (202nd overall) originally belonged to the Texans, acquired in the Kendrick Green trade in 2023.
The Steelers' original 2025 seventh-round pick (237th overall) was traded to the Packers when they acquired Preston Smith at the trade deadline last season.
