The Steelers are planning to host Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders for a pre-draft visit this week, a source confirms with DK Pittsburgh Sports.
Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is the consensus second-best quarterback in this year's draft. Standing under 6-2 with an average arm by NFL standards and a surprising lack of mobility, Sanders has some traits that concern fans.
However, he's an accurate passer with a great feel for the pocket. He's especially great at staying poised under pressure and consistently makes accurate throws in such circumstances. He's a far better prospect than Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart and Alabama's Jalen Milroe.
Hosting Sanders doesn't exactly mean the Steelers are eyeing at taking him at 21st overall. But, they are doing the right thing in doing all of their homework on this year's quarterback class, regardless of how anyone values it. They formally met with Dart and Ohio State's Will Howard at the Combine. Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan had dinner with Milroe before the Alabama pro day, then did the same with Howard ahead of the Ohio State pro day. The team has brought in Dart and Louisville's Tyler Shough for pre-draft visits.
The team doesn't currently have a franchise quarterback, and they should be turning over every stone to find one. The draft is unpredictable. If it falls a certain way, the Steelers need to be as prepared as possible, especially with the game's most important position.
At one point this spring, it wasn't thought that Sanders could ever fall as 21st overall. Now, there's a feeling he may slide within their range. Should Sanders fall into their lap, the Steelers need to be as educated as possible before they make their selection. That's why these visits happen.
