The Steelers have met with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at the NFL Scouting Combine, a source tells DK Pittsburgh Sports.
Simpson, 23, is coming off his lone season as a starter for the Crimson Tide, in which he completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also led the SEC with 305 completions and 473 pass attempts. He is currently projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
At 6-2 and 208 pounds, Simpson doesn't possess ideal size for an NFL quarterback, though he isn't too small, either. He has sound mechanics, especially in his lower body, which helps him make consistently accurate throws. However, he doesn't possess a standout trait, such as elite arm talent or dynamic mobility. When a quarterback is lacking a superstar trait, they must make up for it somehow, usually is how quickly they can process and make correct reads.
That's what weeks like this are for. Sure, the measurables are important, but having a sit-down meeting with him, teaching him parts of the offense, seeing how he can retain information, how passionate he is about football -- that's when Mike McCarthy and/or Omar Khan can truly learn if this is a player worth the risk of a first-round pick. And, Simpson won't likely be available by the time the Steelers pick in the second round. So, if they really like him, they'll have to seriously consider him at 21st overall.
